View from the Student Section - A Perspective from Campus:
The only thing that I hate more than Syracuse basketball is…wait, I don’t hate anything more than Syracuse basketball. When I enrolled at Georgetown, I decided to stop eating oranges and chose to burn every article of clothing that was that awful color. Since that time, all of my views of Syracuse have been confirmed.
I traveled on the student road trip to Syracuse last year. The whole city has a depressing feel. While there, I came to the conclusion that nuclear waste must have gotten into the water system and made the student body a bunch of idiots, but then I realized that the admissions department is to blame for that. In addition, some Syracuse genius decided it would be an amazing idea to stick Georgetown students in the Syracuse student section, surrounded by drunk morons. I thought that it was ridiculous that the student body would throw assorted refreshments and even glass bottles at us the whole game, until I realized that Eric Devendorf is their role model. His ugly face still haunts the nightmares of girls all over the country.
A win against the thugs that make up the Syracuse basketball team would be huge. I want to see Andy Rautins, who consumes half of America’s hair gel production, get a swift kick in the crotch. Also, I think it must be said that Onuaku looks a little too much like the marshmallow man. He also shoots free throws like Vernon Macklin. Here’s to a win at the hellhole! Hoya Saxa!
View from the Court Side Seats - A Perspective from OldHoya:
OldHoya states it emphatically - the most important game in Georgetown-Syracuse basetball took place on February 13, 1980. Before that game, there was no rivalry between the schools but when the game was over and John Thompson grabbed the mic, the longest running Big East feud was firmly established.
But a YoungHoya at the time, our resident OldHoya was climbing the career ladder and never attended a game at Cuse's Manley Fieldhouse, an older gym that the Orangemen were to leave for the new Carrier Dome following the Georgetown game. Cuse boasted a 57 game winning streak heading into the game and were certain that the game would be a walk.
The game didn't open well for Gtown, who trailed Cuse 30-16 at haltime. That team featured Al Dutch, Craig Shelton (Gtown's first major recruit - beat out Al McGuire to land him), and Sleepy Floyd (Gtown's 3 most highly regarded recruits to date) along with Ed Spriggs and John Duren. Well, Sleepy led the charge and hit 2 free throws to win the game 52-50. Big John grabbed the mic and announced "Manley Fieldhouse is officially closed." A legendary quote from a legendary coach.
Interestingly, Gtown went on to lose an Elite 8 game to Iowa that year - the single worst loss OldHoya has ever taken (narrowly edging out Ray Allen's last second shot to defeat Gtown in the Big East tournament).
Finally, Old Hoya had written his blogpost over the weekend, but wanted to commend Sleepy Hoya for some great perspective on the program at that time and some truly vivid memories of our early years. His recollections also caused Old Hoya to remember the previous year (1978-1979) ECAC game final in which the HOYAS beat Syracuse 66-58 and Old Hoya is 99% sure that game was played in, of all places, Maryland's Cole field House.
View from the Sportsbook (via DonBest) - A Perspective from Vegas:
Syracuse -5.5. O/U 147.5.
- Georgetown is 0-2 ATS in games after scoring 80 points or more.
- Syracuse is 10-4 ATS when playing teams with a winning record, and 5-1 ATS when the total is between 140 and 149.5.
- The Hoyas are 1-7 in the previous 8 games it has played Cuse in the Carrier Dome when both teams were ranked in the Top 10.
What do these stats mean? It means that Syracuse is going to win this game in the Carrier Dome by at least 6 points. The pick is Syracuse -5.5 with a final score of Cuse 76 - Hoyas 69. Georgetown is playing well, but this is a tough place to play and a tough game to win. I think the Hoyas can beat Syracuse, I just think that is more likely to happen at the Verizon Center on February 18th than tonight.
As a Hoyas fan I'm looking for Georgetown to keep this competitive and have a chance to win down the stretch. As a gambler I'm looking for Cuse to pull away in the last couple of minutes, with free throws determining the cover.
On the season:
The Hoyas are currently 8-6 ATS (that's 'Against The Spread' for those just tuning in).
Georgetown is 3-1 ATS on the Road, 3-5 ATS at Home, and 2-0 on Neutral Courts.
Casual Hoya is 8-6 ATS.

I like the OVER in this one… Final will be 81-73 – i just have no idea who will win…
By the way, Orangemen star forward Wes Johnson in today’s NYT:
"It definitely is corrupt," Johnson said. He added: "I didn’t realize what a crazy business it is. That’s how it is. It’s always been like that. I’m just glad I ended up on the right. I definitely found paradise."

Don't know who will win
But I don’t think Georgetown loses by more than 5. 3 losses this year have come on a combined 12 points
JGD - January 25, 2010
Zone busters
Tough to shoot well in those big domes since depth perception is all off and stuff.
Feel good about Cuse -5.5, hope Hoyas win outright since a cover is pointless and won’t be profitable.
CasualHoya - January 25, 2010
Zone offense
In a surprising twist, Gtown actually did a nice job in the second half against the Rutgers zone. Granted, Rutgers stinks and doesn’t play hard but the Hoyas got some nice movement rather than standing around as they often do.
itsallthatmatters - January 25, 2010
In all honesty
This is a reallllly tough game for our Hoyas.
I am going in soberly knowing we could win but not believing we will win. I hope to find myself drunk and ecstatic by the end of this game.
TheYellofAllYells - January 25, 2010
yes Cuse is a good team,
and they’ve dominated their soft schedule, BUT
their schedule is just that: soft. They’ve faced two teams currently in the top 25, Pitt and WVU, they are 1-1, with their one victory being by one point.
They’re good at beating good, but unranked teams (ND, Florida, UNC, Memphis)
Just saying, there is a possibility that the Cuse game turns into another Pitt game. An overhyped team gets outplayed by a better Hoya squad.
SomebodyBuyAustinaSteak - January 25, 2010
Easy now.....
let’s not get the “Jinx” Gods working against us on this one…..
Syracuse is a good team and has won the games that they were expected to….. We cannot exactly state the same (whither ODU)…..
I hope that you are YellOfAllYells is drunk and cheering loudly at the end as well….. but remember, we are a very good AND YOUNG team… that is still developing……
MerlinWilson'sSister - January 25, 2010
Ok my bad
how about this… there is no way we can win tonight. The mixture of odors stemming from tens of thousands of unwashed Syracuseans combined with the god awful smell of Andy Rautins’ hair gel (think Something About Mary only with Devendorf instead of Ben Stiller) will be too much for our brave hoyas… oh woe is us :(
SomebodyBuyAustinaSteak - January 25, 2010
Although a loss is imminent
It will not be season ending. And even so, my pick has to be GEORGETOWN +5.5. A loss, but a close one. It should be noted I went 0-2 yesterday. And I am 8-6 ATS picking Hoyas games.

old hoya is right in remembering the great georgetown syracuse game in the finals of the ecac tournament at cole field house. that was a great great to be at. And if my memory is right, which it rarely is anymore, that beat down included beating young mr rautin’s, of hair gel fame, dad

lordnick - January 25, 2010
Triple Tech
A loss will only be acceptable if JTIII gets a triple technical in the process.
I think we have a serious chance of winning if Wright is 4-5 from 3 again. If he misses his first 3 shots, we are done right there.
Maybe its time for Hollis to come out of nowhere and score +20.
RileysDressLikeAHoyaJersey - January 25, 2010 via mobile
Hold your horses there partner...
…this game’s not over after 3 Chris Wright shots no matter how they go. But yeah, our most important offensive goal in the game will be to make those outside shots early to stretch that zone, get comfortable, etc. That’s not just Wright’s job – going to need at least 3 good takes from Clark, a much better jump-shooting performance from Freeman than he has shown since UConn, and I don’t know about 20 from Hollis, but hopefully he can replicate those hits he had against Rutgers because I don’t see Syracuse chasing him down to the corner all the time…he’ll get the looks.
That said, this is a rivalry game, and we actually have a chance to do some damage down low. Capitalizing on ’Cuse’s weakness on the defensive glass could be just as effective a strategy as hitting those jumpers outright if the ball flies our way. Monroe’s been becoming the guy we expected all along – let’s see if he plays angry.

Old Rivalry, New Chapter – 13WHAM.com – Rochester News, Weather, and Sports
In a rivalry game like this, it’s hard to make a realistic prediction. It gets even more difficult when the game is between two highly ranked teams. You could say it could be a slam dunk for Syracuse, but then again, John Thompson closed Manly Field House.
What they’re saying about Syracuse vs. Georgetown | Orange Basketball Blog – syracuse.com
"Don’t get me wrong. Syracuse is a very, very good team. They are deeper than Georgetown top to bottom and have handled all the big tests thrown their way this season put aside Pittsburgh. “But something about this Georgetown game is bugging me.”
Georgetown-Syracuse: a rivalry for the ages, and a new generation – washingtonpost.com
“It’s evident,” says junior guard Chris Wright, who is from Bowie. “The battle we’re going to be in Monday is something that’s been happening for a long time. We all understand that. And we have to understand that we’re carrying on a tradition, and we have to honor that and play our hearts out for that game.”
New ‘Shut it Down’ shirts hit stores in time for SU/Georgetown game – News10Now.com
“It’s not what I think we’re going to do it’s what I know we’re going to do and we’re going to take the crown because Georgetown’s our rival and we’re going to do what we need to do,” said Syracuse University senior Ari Slavin.

TheYellofAllYells - January 25, 2010
Keys
I think our offense is operating at a high enough level to be fine. We’re far from perfect, but this isn’t like past years when if Greenie or Roy isn’t playing well everything shuts down. The key is going to be defense. We’ve been getting murdered by teams that shoot well from outside, particularly when we go zone/match-up zone. Can we keep Rautins and Johnson from both going off from behind 3? If we hold them to a combined 30, we’re in good shape. If we’re not switching on screens, we’re going to be F’d.

We are a second half team. We came back all the way against Nova at Nova. We beat UConn after being down 15 at half. We were tied with Pitt then dominated the 2nd half. Let’s have faith in this team and our coach to make some adjustments. Rautins isn’t hitting those circus 3s, no one is in foul trouble, and we stole some minutes with Hollis and Jerrelle. Them playing in this game, no matter how bad, is important to our future success this year.

To the Orange fans on this blog…all I can say is, “”http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=smh" >SMH," either interpretation.
We’re still good…right now the Orange are better but we’ll see if the refs make the same calls and their defense is still as effective on February 18. Time to refocus on Duke Saturday.

Let me get this straight?
You constantly bring up our graduation rate as a way to make yourselves feel better that your current coaching staff has a complete inability to recruit top players who even have a prayer of being effective in the NBA? OK I got it.
