Jonathon Wallace, J.D. and I were able to get to McDonough for only one game yesterday and we made sure it was the 4:40pm Tombs game since we haven't had a chance to see them play yet. Well worth it. Not only did we get to see Austin, Hollis and the 4 rising freshmen but yes Jeff Green decided to show up for the second Saturday in a row. JT III and his dad were also in attendance. A few casual observations...
Kenner observations after The Jump:

Austin looked great and very fit. He had some great shots and really commanded the floor. I expected more from Hollis. He really hustled but...eh. As for the newbies, I thought the standout was Markel Starks. Fast, aggressive and made some great shots. Still rough around the edges but definitely the point guard of the future. Aaron Bowen also was impressive. Moses Abraham and Nate Lubick both had some good plays...and some not-so-good plays. Moses snagged some nice rebounds and if he can keep that consistent, he will give Julian some much needed rest time. And Jeff Green...what can you say its Jeff Green. Still a phenomenal player with a great smile and just looks like the nicest kid in the world. He was great passing to the younger players and setting them up for plays but then every once in a while decided to show off a bit...some great, really deep 3 point shots with a hand right in his face. He was also apparently wearing Kevin Durant's new shoes which aren't on sale yet. Team Turner seemed to be full of Maryland and GW players including Terp Adrian Bowie who was a standout. But Tombs won 69-61. The last few minutes were painful while the other Coach - who didn't get the memo that this was summer league and was taking the game WAY too seriously - kept yelling for his players to foul even even though there was no chance for them to cut the lead. Another fun thing - we were sitting in front of Rich Chvotkin, the voice of Georgetown who has been the announcer for a few years longer than I have been alive. It was fun to listen to him chat to his friends about the players. Also sitting in the section next to us was Father McFadden, the other voice of Georgetown, i.e. the announcer at home games. Also famous for performing the marriage ceremony of our own lordnick. Oh, and Austin and a player on Team Turner got into a little tiff with two minutes left. Not sure exactly what happened to cause it - maybe low blood sugar - but all of the sudden there was a lot of shoving and dropping of F bombs. Both players were pulled from the game before it got worse. If anyone saw what actually happened, do tell.
Stay Casual, my friends.

Post is right, a lot of pushing and f bombs that took great advantage of the great mcdonough acoustics. Here’s what happened. Markel Starks wandered into the foul line meeting of the other team, he’d been pushing back and forth all afternoon with one guy, but it seemed all in good fun…In this case, one of the other players took exception to him standing there and pushed him hard out of their little huddle. Before Starks had a chance to do or say anything, Austin jumped in pushed the guy back and unleashed a verbal assault that directly challenged the manhood of this guy….it’s great that you can hear everything..
It was a few seconds away from getting ugly, but hte refs and a couple of players jumped in to defuse.
YOu can make too much of almost anything that happens in summer league, but it was a pretty impressive demonstration of leadership from a guy who’s been a quiet guy on the court for his ffirst three years. Austin sent a strong message about what he’ll tolerate with his freshman in his house.

Thanks sleepy!
You must have been a little closer – good stuff. And imagine if Austin didn’t always have his mouthguard hanging out the side of his mouth – he may actually be able to enunciate more!!

God Help this Blog
What kind of lunatic gets up at 6:26 in the morning on a Sunday to blog about Kenner league games?
And then who is up at 6:50 to COMMENT?
What a special group of people.

Chvotkin
My favorite part of the day was the guy sitting next to Chvotkin, rattling off one Big East team after another, and asking Chvotkin how he thinks each will do this year. Pitt-“they’ll be good”. Nova-“they’ll be good”. Marquette-“I like them”. DePaul-“they’ll be good”. Seton Hall-“they’ll be good”. Georgetown-“they’ll be top 5 in the Big East”
there’s nothing to take away from this story…except I’m left wondering whether Rich is in the delusional or cynical camp.

OT
it always amuses me how good adrian bowie of maryland looks in Kenner league. He looks like a stud in this setting every year, then stinks it up on the real court.

OldHoya also took in The Tombs
He speaks very highly of Starks but says that the bigs – Lubbick and Moses – have a ways to go (but also that Moses is quite athletic).
In other news, OldHoya finally got himself a flat screen and celebrated by watching ‘The Godfather.’

I keep hearing a lot of great things about Starks
if only we could start an all-guard team
