4 months ago: WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 4: Darius Johnson-Odom #1 of the Marquette Golden Eagles shots is blocked by Henry Sims #14 and Jabril Trawick #55 of the Georgetown Hoays during a college basketball game on January 4, 2012 at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. (Photo by Mitchell Layton/Getty Images)
Just when we thought this season couldn't get more awesome, Georgetown decided to erase a 17 point deficit and beat Marquette in a 73-70 thriller at the Verizon Center. The Hoyas' three upperclassmen - Jason Clark, Henry Sims, and Hollis Thompson - were sensational in the victory. Thompson showed that he remains a closer, with his second game winning three pointer of the season. He finished with 16 points on 6-7 shooting from the field. Clark was the best player on the floor, singlehandedly keeping the Hoyas in the game for much of the second half and finishing with 26 points and 6 rebounds. Sims took over late in the game, dominating on both the offensive and defensive ends, finishing with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals.
After The Jump, VICTORY.

Whittington, of all the freshmen, really impressed tonight. His defense on Darius Johnson-Odom changed the complexion of the game. It is an incredible asset to have a 6'9" shooting guard on the floor that can defend three positions. His length, coupled with Porter and Thompson, caused the Marquette swingmen fits down the stretch.
Georgetown has now won 11 straight games, the longest winning streak since the 2006-2007 season, which resulted in a Final Four appearance. I'm just sayin'. This season remains very young, but the poise that this team has exhibited in wins over Alabama, Memphis, Marquette, Louisville, and Providence is well beyond what should be expected of a roster comprised of 10 underclassmen.
More than anything, what I love about this team is that different players make huge contributions on different nights. In the victory over Louisville, it was Markel Starks scoring 20 points and Trawick keeping us in the game in the first half. Tonight those two players combined for 2 points. In the Louisville game, Thompson, Clark and Sims combined for 24 points. Tonight the three of them scored 55 of 73 points. In addition, JT3 seems to be having the most fun he's had in a few years, even fist pumping after Marquette missed their last three point attempt and high fiving Trawick for good measure. His coaching performance this year makes him the early favorite for National Coach of the Year.
The Hoyas now sit at 13-1 overall and 3-0 in Big East play, with another massive challenge coming Saturday against West Virginia and then Monday against Cincinnati. With Duke losing tonight at Temple and Providence down two at half against Syracuse, this could be one of the most satisfying nights in a long time.
West Virginia is next.

You know
if they’d hit their free throws at a decent rate, we’d have covered, and had fewer heart attacks.
That said – awesome game. Hollis = Reggie!

OTTO-MAN EMPIRE is here to rule!
Holy crap! Watching that game at Verizon was better than sex. The crowd was great even with a smattering of the students back from break. They just kept chipping away at that lead and never gave up. So proud of these freshmen! But, dare I say…..I think this should be the last game Lubick starts in. What a poor performance again. HOYA SAXA! Love this team!!!

Would be a lock to invite back. I think the football teams are worried that they’d lose face by inviting them back now that they are so bad in comparison. Plus, Philly is a casual roadtrip and a candidate for future thunderbuses.

Our early deficit was on JTIII
Casual switch from 2-3 zone fail at half time to man had night-and-day results.
Lots of errors by the troops but the system failed them. Would have liked to have seen a switch at a time out earlier, but good on JTIII for continuing to learn and adapt.

Failing a bit harsh... but the zone wasn't working well
Too much space for Marquette to maneuver and drive

that our boys weren’t showing the composure that they had in previous wins. And then they just shoved that right in my face for the last ten minutes. And it was good.
J-Wall's Mom's Broom - January 4, 2012
Amazing win for Gtown tonight. I don’t see hot JT3 doesn’t get Coach Of The Year with the not so high expectations this team had coming into the season. Also nice to see Clark and Sims show some leadership in the 2nd half and bring this team back in the game.

He should only get coach of the half-year
Remember, he and his “system” were responsible for us going down at halftime.
WarmupEwing - January 4, 2012
The end result matters
Not the halftime score. Agree with both points of Gtownfan’s post, personally. Maybe not that JTIII is a shoo-in for COTY, but certainly a front runner at this point.

But Clark won this game. When everyone at Verizon was dead — the crowd and the Hoyas alike — Clark willed the team back to life. He decided the team was going to win a good 3-4 mins before anyone else there.

Georgetown Professor of Lameness??
So…in the dark ages when we were down 17, a grey haired old man with an earing in 105 (yeah the student section) yelled at a classy lady for supporting her hoyas by standing up during the contest. Interestingly enough, when the hoyas clawed within 5 this individual decided to stand up as well.
Afterwards, I confornted said old f*ck, who was sporting an earing, about his choice to yell at a hoya for standing up IN THE STUDENT SECTION. After multiple discussions, this, man yelled that he was a professor and that i better not take his class.
Really? a professor that does not support STUDENTS STANDING UP?!?! SOMEONE DE-TENURE HIM!!!! IS THAT A WORD?!?!?! WELL IT SHOULD BE!!!
This man does not deserve to teach at Georgetown. Please hurl Chipotle leftovers at him if you’re in a class with a grey haired man who thinks he’s too cool for school by wearing an earing (hint:…he’s not).

An earring, eh?
If he had a white beard, it could be the Jesuit father that used to sing for the Chimes. I don’t recall his name, but he still teaches at Georgetown…and yes, he actually wears an earring.
But I do have a hard time believing he would yell at students, (or someone he thought was a student) for standing up at a basketball game.

And in 107, a professorial couple howled at the two young alums ahead of them for much of the first half
I thought they were MU fans for a while, before realizing that prof(s) was more likely. I can’t decide if I’d rather they stay home or if perhaps Verizon should set aside some senile citizen seating for the belligerently aging.

I'm sorry to hear this, but not surprised.
I’ve got season tix in section 100, and I’ve experienced some of the same sentiment, and oddly enough, it was also from people self-identified as faculty. I certainly didn’t recognize them, but it seems our professorial counterparts at GU seem to feel entitled at Hoya games. At least some of them. It’s sad, and really sort of shameful that they would act that way at a basketball game.

Wish Cuse had a real schedule
tjm62 - January 4, 2012
Cuse always schedules a pussy non-conference schedule
and then always underperforms their tourney seed during the tourney. Yet those Einsteins never put two and two together….
I’m sure this year will be no different. Cuse will get a 1 or 2 seed than will once again flame out in the round of 32 or the sweet 16. Untested teams don’t come up big come tourney time.
SomebodyBuyAustinaSteak - January 4, 2012
I am, however, enjoying the fruits of OUR soft out-of-conference schedule
tjm62 - January 4, 2012
fun statistic
since conference expansion, six big east programs have made it to the elite 8. syracuse is not one of them.
Hire Esherick - January 4, 2012
I kind of think the soft non-conference schedule and the poor tourney finishes
are both symptons of a larger Cuse softness problem. It seems like every year, Cuse is built to be a team that expects to win because of its highly talented players playing a tough to figure out defense.
The whole attitude leads to a soft team culture that doesn’t serve them well when they need to scrap out tough victories come tourney time..
SomebodyBuyAustinaSteak - January 4, 2012
The complete and utter lack of self-awareness
of a Georgetown fan criticizing any other school for not scrapping out tough victories in tourney time is amazing and a joy to behold. Try getting out of the first round before calling out another school. That was a very impressive win last night for you guys last night, so congratulations for that. Georgetown right now is the second best team in the BE. And for the record, Syracuse is ranked number one RPI with a SOS of two (2), compared to G’town’s not horrible thirty-five (35). But please, don’t let facts shatter your lack of any self-awareness, it is highly entertaining.

you’ve played exactly 1 top 25 team (at home).
Sorry beating Vermont, Albany and Colgate at home doesn’t mean you’ve had a hard strength of schedule, no matter what misleading SoS statistic you cite.
By contrast, we’ve played 5 top 25 teams.
SomebodyBuyAustinaSteak - January 5, 2012
Okay
look at a common opponent. You played at Providence and scored 49 points, won by 9, in a game in which they called two more fouls on Georgetown and Prov. shot 5 more FTs. Syracuse played at Providence, scored 87 points, and won by 14 in a game where Prov. shot 12 more FTs and didn’t have a 2nd team foul until there were 8 minutes left in the 2nd half. Equal setting, equal opponent, and Syracuse won in a much more convincing fashion. But all of that is irrelevant to the point that what you said above was an opinion with no basis in fact.

Wow. Is this even delusion anymore?
REALITY.
MyFairHoya - January 4, 2012
Casual Randomness
So I’m sitting (actually pacing and screaming and throwing shit around my townhouse) watching the Hoyas suck out loud, down 17 in the second half. My brother was instrumental in helping me not perform hara-kari at this point, so kudos to him. Now here comes the comeback. Here comes the Clark +1 (by the way…I bitch about refs all of the time…no way that wasn’t a charge, but I digress). Here comes Henry Sims playing like Hakeem the Dream. Here comes Hollis banging back three balls. I’m starting to untie the noose from my neck. And then what happens? My doorbell rings. It’s a buddy of mine from work (senior to me) and his 10 month pregnant wife who wanted to stop by and say hello at 9pm on a Wednesday night. I wouldn’t have been more surprised if the Pope walked in. So they come in, sit down, ask what I’m watching as my face is as red as a stop sign, I’m sweating profusely, and I’m hoarse. So I watched the last 2 minutes of this game with these two on my couch. Hollis hits the 3 to take the lead and I kind of give it a golf clap instead of the Tiger Woods fist pump and “FUK YEAHHHHH” gutteral scream I usually give because I don’t want to fully freak them out and have her go into labor.
Weird/long story but it was a weird/long game. For some reason, the randomness that went on chez BBFITB was completely fitting for such a great comeback. I made a comment to another blogger on this very website earlier tonight that it was disconcerting to see Jason lose his stroke so early in the year…usually it is around game 25. I’m so glad he shut me up….way to be a leader, JC. Now let’s start hitting 2 free throws in a row going forward.

In defense of Lubick starting
I read an interesting piece on KenPom about substitution patterns (http://kenpom.com/blog/index.php/weblog/a_graph_of_substitution_patterns/) which suggests that Otto might be helped by coming into the game later when fewer opposing starters are on the floor. Could be good for a boost each game. Also, Lubick plays pretty good post defense.

I have faith that JT3 knows what he’s doing, and Lubick is going to be a very important piece to the puzzle in the next three years, so if we keep winning while he regains his confidence, those are good things.
JGD - January 5, 2012
Have to agree with everyone else
That was an awesomely fun crowd at the Verizon Center. I can’t remember the last time
I had that much fun at a random game. My section spent almost the whole second half standing and starting senseless cheers. You can rhyme a lot with Clark, and Sims. Trawick, less so.
To the old lady behind me: Next time you get a casual cougars shirt.
BeerBottlesToTheFaceOfSyracuseFans - January 4, 2012 via mobile
definitely
i was quite impressed that the crowd was getting loud with 10-12 mins left, even though we were losing by double figures.
thunderbus - January 4, 2012
you could tell the crowd was ready and willing to go nuts – as soon as the Hoyas cut it to 10pts they were already getting loud. I was definitely impressed
aja32 - January 5, 2012
Just saw a stat
We only missed 5 shots in the second half. Good for like 70%

MVP
The announcer of the game on ESPNU was awesome
jsk793 - January 4, 2012
Loved the ending
Something like “Hoyas Win! Hoyas Win! Hoyas Win!”
Circus Saximus - January 4, 2012
do we have an official Chvotcount on this one?
SirHoya - January 4, 2012 via iPhone app
i've read it was 15x
PitHoyaFan - January 4, 2012
I was told the same by a friend in the military who was streaming the radio feed.
StPetersburgHoya - January 4, 2012
and he screamed when Hoyas took the late lead too
he was good – clearly enjoying it
aja32 - January 5, 2012
Loved the Sportscenter highlights
But was not aware that Hollis Thomason sank our game winner
rochesterhoya07 - January 5, 2012
tremendous way to deal with the pain
from our esteemed brethren over at Anonymous Eagle.
Speaking of numbers – the score box at the top of the main page is really quite remarkable. That kind of half to half swing surely doesn’t happen very often.
SirHoya - January 5, 2012
Hah!
Teacher of the year!

I didn't watch this game. FOR A REASON.
text exchange at halftime, 43-29 Marquette:
me: “Stop watching the game, you’re bad luck”
Ethan: “I dunno about that, I’ve watched all the others”
me: “Then I must be the factor at fault here. You see I’m following this game on gamecast, rather than sleeping through it like I usually do”
me: “I’m going to bed. If we make a second half comeback, you know who to thank”
Final score 73-70 Hoyas

Seth Davis gives bad advice.
sa499 - January 5, 2012
I don't get why one would want to treat basketball teams like stocks
It leads you to do things like sell Georgetown because they are outplaying expectations and buy Villanova because they are sucking out loud. But I can understand why Seth Davis does it, since he seems to love making random predictions in the hopes of having an “I called it” moment later on. Case in point, in the 2008 tournament he spent the entire first weekend yammering on about how Davidson would upset Georgetown, then crowing about it after Gollum took us out.

Love the Popovich quote, too.
American Exceptionalism: Exceptional fast food and exceptional dance moves.
WallaceAtTheLineShooting2 - January 5, 2012
Popovich is awesome
Two of my favorite quotes:
"We suck on ‘D. Both individually and team-wise, we suck. We’re pretty consistent that way. I don’t know if I have an answer to that. If I did, we wouldn’t suck quite so bad."
"I asked them if it wasn’t too much trouble, if I wasn’t being too pushy, if they could execute what we were trying to do. And if it didn’t make them too angry, if they also wanted to play some defense on the other end, that would be great."

On a Different Note
Did anyone notice the cans on the Marquette trainer last night. Yowza!

I work at the Verizon Center
Total attendance last night was 8,205.
That includes 88 student tickets.
Chicken Finger Thursdays - January 5, 2012
WOW
That is staggering
JGD - January 5, 2012
We were wondering post-game whether the Phone Booth staff
were encouraging people to move closer to the court in the second half. It seemed like there were many more fans in the lower bowl for the last 10 minutes than were in the arena just before halftime.
HoyaSmacksYa - January 5, 2012
ESPN pegged attendance at 11,213

Circus Saximus - January 5, 2012
They probably report paid attendance
Not actual gate entrance numbers
Chicken Finger Thursdays - January 5, 2012
whatever it was
attendance sucked, but the crowd was great
Hire Esherick - January 5, 2012
Part of the problem is the way the athletic department gives out student tickets to mid-break games
You have to pick them up ahead of time, otherwise you forfeit them. You don’t get them as part of the package. That way they know how many seats to save and how many they can sell in the lower bowl. But it also means that you can’t decide at the last minute to use your season ticket to go to the game if you didn’t reserve it earlier.
At least that’s how it used to be… correct me if I’m wrong
hoyasaxan - January 6, 2012
Even if it's wrong
Tickets can be purchased for $9. If you’re arriving back on campus a day early, call and get the damn ticket. After all that home-cookin’ over the holidays most students could probably forgo a couple madnesses this week.

Hoya2aPacer Is this the best gtown team coach JT3 has had since he’s been at the school. I’m beginning to think yes. These dudes are good.
