West Virginia Blues: Georgetown Loses 74-62 To The Mountaineers, 11 Game Win Streak Snapped

All good things come to an end. After a captivating 11 game winning streak, the Georgetown Hoyas lost in Morgantown 74-62 to West Virginia. The Hoyas played very good defense, but turnovers and a lack of three point shooting were the downfall today. Truck Bryant and Kevin Jones were very impressive, combining for 47 points and proving that they are arguably the best one-two punch in the Big East. For the Hoyas, Hollis Thompson was the star, scoring 20 points on 13 field goals, but also missing 5 crucial free throws. For a guy with one of the prettiest shooting strokes I've ever seen, that can't happen again.

The Hoyas have very little time to lick their wounds, as a tough Cincinnati squad comes to the Verizon Center Monday night at full strength after half their team was suspended for throwing various haymakers in their game against Xavier.

After The Jump, more thoughts.

Star-divide

Before we go into meltdown mode, let's have some perspective on the first 15 games of the season. This Georgetown team, comprised of 10 freshmen and sophomores, did not receive a single Top 25 vote and was picked to finish 10th in the Big East. All they've done since is win 13 of 15 games, including wins at Louisville and Alabama and thrilling victories over Marquette and Memphis (2x). In addition, the Hoyas are 3-1 to start Big East play when even the most delusional of us would have been happy with 2-2.

Today was just not Georgetown's day. West Virginia, since Bob Huggins has been the coach, has given us fits. They have beaten us in all four years since these seniors stepped on campus. For whatever reason, we never shoot well in that gym, and they always force a ton of turnovers. That said, it is important that we stop relying on magical comebacks and put forth a solid 40 minutes of effort going forward. The last minute comebacks are thrilling, but also a really good way to lose a bunch of games quickly in the Big East grinder if effort isn't 100% throughout the game.

For those of you who are now predicting a "collapse", please find another forum to voice those frustrations. College basketball is built on parity, and no one in their right minds would have expected us to win out all the way through April. In addition, WE DIDN'T COLLAPSE LAST YEAR, we lost our best player and heart of the team to a broken hand. We have had one collapse in John Thompson's tenure at Georgetown - being knocked out as a #3 seed in the NCAA Tournament is not a collapse, it's a bad game. This year's team has shown time and again that it has great character, and I expect a victory on Monday night. Even if we don't win Monday night, it's still not a damn collapse, so go sit on some rusty nails.

I am not giving up my luxury seat on the DELUSION TRAIN, I hope the rest of you will continue to join me.

Cincinnati is next.

The WVU fans really seem to appreciate their Turkish Sasquatch player.

They would definitely respect his Islamic Turkish heritage if he didn’t play basketball for them.

Good perspective, JGD
Fanned.. co-sign
I am actually looking forward to the Cincinnati game

Time to avenge Chris Wright’s broken hand. Also time for Jabril to make another dude bleed from his head.

I like your handle

And the latter part of this post.

Thank you

Can anyone remember which player/asshole specifically broke his hand? I’ve been looking for the man in red shoes as if I was Harrison Ford looking for the man with one arm.

agreed

very good thoughts about cincy.

Hope the fellas can chill out on the bus, get a day of rest tomorrow

And then give Cincy a merciless beating on Monday night. Something tells me Broad Street Brilly is seething and ready to bring it against Cronin et al.

Defensive scouting report on Cinci:

Taunt Gates until he punches you in the face and gets tossed. I believe in Brilly.

Ouch talk about taking one for the team..
CW coming to the Rutgers game..

SELF_MADEest89 Hoya Fans holla at me if u see me at the game!! Miss yall, even tho yall use to get on me erry now n then!! lol grrrr

and also

SELF_MADEest89 @JCDeuceUNO Keep YOUR team together, yall still gonna win the bigeast #iBelieve

All good things...

Hopping off the delusion train? No way!

I would rather we lose today and stay grounded, than keep winning and get carried away with ourselves come tournament time.

READY

To see Cincy get trounced. You don’t fuck with our Chris and go unpunished.

HOYA SAXA

Lol Truth!

“Douchey coach faces. In order: 1) Martin from KSU, 2) Huggin WVU 3) coach K, 4) Crean from Indiana 5) Huggins again…"

Only thing good about the loss is we can start playing hungry again..

I feel like once we got to top 10 status we lost that edge a bit, played on our heels a bit.

Hopefully we get that back now…

Stay hungry Hoyas!

...must come to an end.

Think Imma go play some hoops at the gym today..

Planning on Violently flagrant fouling anybody who has yellow or blue on.. book it

You gotta crawl before you ball

…learn from it and moveon to the next. Short turnaround means can put this L behind us quickly. Dominate the bearcats!

Well done to be a voice of reason so quickly after the game ended...

Considering you must be (at least in the short-term) as displeased with the outcome as everybody else

Tough one

But good lessons for young team.

Love Henrys confidence. future is bright

Nati laying a egg right now against the Johnnies.. down 9.. 13min left
1-19 in the 2nd half.. and we thought we played bad today
Gotta love Chris Wright's tweets today

I don’t usually follow Twitter, but when I do… I follow Casual Hoya’s Twitter Feed.

STAY THIRSTY, MY HOYAS

WVU just has our number

Credit to their bball team for playing exactly the kind of game they needed to in order to win. I’m not sure how much you can learn from an atrocious shooting performance, but hopefully the Hoyas will bring it angry to Cincy on Monday.

You have to

support the players through wins and losses. WVU held a clinic on how to hold onto and expand a lead down the stretch.

Console yourselves with the thought that a Hoya gets the royalties from that fucking song.

Grudging respect for Boeheim

Melo just got a flagrant and they got a slow mo clip of Boeheim responding to Melo’s excuse by saying “You elbowed him in the face…yes.”

Good for Marquette for fighting back from an 18 point deficit

We are all rooting for them

Now if only they could find a slow mo clip

of Boeheim responding to Fine’s excuse by saying “You molested children…yes.” Still no respect.

At the Providence/Seton Hall game tonight

Bearing first-hand witness to the back of Coach Cooley’s head makes one realize that there are worse things in life than absorbing an L in Morgantown.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

I have all the respect in the world for your team. You’ll be fine going forward. Young team, hostile environment, WVU team amped up to host a top 10 team…those losses happen. I’m proud of my boys today because they beat a quality opponent. Best of luck to you all the rest of the way.

fun back and forth with you this week

see you in the BET

Thanks. I have tons of respect for W. Virginia's gritty defense. It is consistently good

You guys played a great game. They have good defense and made several clutch shots when it got close. I never like a loss but there are far worse places to lose. This conference is a murder house and it should be expected at some point. You can get knocked out by any team.

Note: I still retain the right to mock the stereotypical W. Virginia fan and those stupid enough to take the bait.

wise words indeed
We are en route to 6-12 in the Big East

Book it

Not sure if serious...
NW the Knicks vs Pistons

Greg is playing well averaging 16 and 9 early in the season..
Proud of him and his development looks like he is going to be a 20 10 guy in the league for some years to come

Roy had a great & efficient game.

20 points on 16 shots, 8 reb, 3 blocks, no TOs, as the Pacers easily handle an inferior bobcats team. As they should. They’ll have home-court in a playoff series this year.

Hop off the Delusion Train?

We need to get more mileage out of that animated delusion train on the gamethread.

And thank you, JGD, for this:

“WE DIDN’T COLLAPSE LAST YEAR, we lost our best player and heart of the team to a broken hand. We have had one collapse in John Thompson’s tenure at Georgetown – being knocked out as a #3 seed in the NCAA Tournament is not a collapse, it’s a bad game.”

and down go the Connvicts

Rutgers no easy out this year

The BE Is Tooooooooooughhhh!!

Eli Carter is balling right now.. Not looking forward to facing him over the next four years..

A topsy turvy day in the big east, to say the least

There were a ton of upsets this week..

Virtually everybody behind us lost this week as well except Indiana and Mich State… Amazing if we would have handled West Va we would probably be 6th in the nation with Uconn Duke and Mizzou all going down.. O_o Not sure that would be the best thing for a young team honestly, but hard to say why I feel that way..

Care more about big east right now. Two one loss conference teams go at it Monday night. Big game for hoyas

agree

bring on Cincinnati

Just watched the game from my Hawaiian paradise.

Very depressed. We looked horrible and the Louisville loss doesnt help anything.

We'll be fine

10+ game winning streaks are fairly rare for a reason, particularly for young teams.
