(Perspectives After The Jump)

View from the Student Section - A Perspective from Campus:
Well, we're back in DC as the Hoyas take on Cincy tonight. I'm not going to lie to you, I have an irrational fear of Cincinnati based on our results against them ever since I've stepped foot on campus. Our game against them last year spelled the end of the season for Georgetown, for all intensive purposes, so I hope to god we can avenge this tragedy. I fully plan on getting Yancy Gates to knock me out, and get him suspended for the rest of the season(how I will do that is yet to be determined). I do feel like I am hitting mid-season form with my fan skills, so hopefully the Hoyas will show that they are hitting their stride as well. Sean Kilpatrick makes me nervous as does Justin Jackson, who can rebound the ball. Similar to Georgetown, Cincinnati has some length, but they also have essentially no offensive system, no coach, and no players (just thugs). Weird start time aside, let's ZIP EM UP!!!!! Hoya Saxa.
View from the Court Side Seats - A Perspective from OldHoya:
OldHoya is still seething after that game against WVU and wishes he were courtside in Morgantown so he could have sent a message to those trigger happy refs himself. Tonight, OldHoya looks forward to being back at Verizon, and hopes the Hoyas can win this one to avenge last season's loss in which Chris Wright broke his hand.
OldHoya still doesn't consider the Bearcats a true Big East rival, and doesnt' quite understand why they serve chili with spaghetti in Cincinnati.
View from the Enemy- A Perspective from our Sleeping With The Enemy Interview:
DD: I have to take Georgetown in this one. The Bearcats haven't done well in Washington in the past and I think Georgetown presents some match up problems for the Bearcats small ball approach.
BB: I have a bad feeling it's going to be more like the game 2 years ago in DC than the one last year. Not quite by the margin, but by the losing. I don't know how this Cincinnati team plays on the road, and they haven't played that well lately. I'll go Georgetown 69-60.

JahidiLikesPie Nervous Level: |
OH CRAP |
What an awful weekend. I sat through that eye-gouging loss without so much as even sniffing an adult beverage. Normally, the first sign of a GU game playing out like that is cause to begin to pour as much Coors Light down my throat as science will allow. Unfortunately, I did very poor resolution negotiations and made a commitment to pick January as my 'dry-out month'. Why did I not bargain for something that would have been easier like bacon or strip clubs or black licorice? Instead, I am now forced to spend the next 3 weeks watching this team with no anesthesia. I then proceeded to follow the scores of every conference game for the rest of the weekend and realize that I may not make it past next Sunday when I will be watching us play the Johnnies from great seats.
Cincinnati. Can we pull out that vengeance tour bus from the 2010 BET and get that thing going? I really want to pay Cashmere back for RUINING MY SPRING. Now that we have that out of the way, let me tell you how nervous I am about this game? This team is no slouch. Yancy gates has the ability to 'Kevin Jones' us on the inside, Jacknife Powerbomb Henry Sims and then lay The People's Elbow down on everyone that comes to rescue Hank. While, Yancy can't shoot from the outside, it seems that those around him can. Can you say Holy Shit? I can, but the blog lords will translate it 'Oh Crap!'
View from the Sportsbook (via DonBest) - A Perspective from Vegas:
The Line: Georgetown -6.5. Over/under 125.
The good news for Georgetown is that Cincy plays a very similar style to West Virginia. The bad news for Georgetown is that just like the games against WVU, the games against Cincy are equally difficult to watch and often shitshow foulfests. I expect this one to be low scoring, and though I don't like giving up this many points in a Big East game, I'll roll with the Hoyas since the game is at home and Georgetown can't play much worse than it did on Saturday. I think. This is a reluctant Hoyas selection. Very reluctant.
The pick is Georgetown -6.5. Final score Hoyas 74 - Beacats 66.
Casual Hoya is 8-7 ATS this season.
Last season: 18-14.
Overall 48-29.www.CasualHoya.com: Where Your Money Stays And Plays.

Up $80 and 2/2 at the books. Georgetown is only -3.5 here at the Monte Carlo. Jumpin all over that line.

hoyabballownsall - January 9, 2012
He may be unusually kind
but I don’t think he is right. Sims is a very good passer but Monroe was excellent. Guess it depends on how you classify Jeff Green as well.
ReggieandtheMiracles - January 9, 2012
I agree, Monroe is great and had a double digit assist game (at Providence?)
but that pass by Henry at WV around his man to the cutter was NAICE.
Brasky - January 9, 2012
seems almost a little back handed
sims is so great a passer , but if D Green was in the sytem he’d be even better
hoyafan03 - January 9, 2012
Monroe better
JGD - January 9, 2012
no doubt
soya - January 9, 2012
Monroe a better passer.
Esteban d' Amur - January 9, 2012
Agreed
You just get me, man.
JGD - January 9, 2012
Never inclined to disagree with Esteban
And won’t here. However, I will say that Monroe arrived as a much better passer and his instincts fit JTIII’s offense ideally from the moment he stepped onto the court. Much like Otto now, Monroe had the unusual ability to see plays before they developed and predict where the opening would be.
Sims arrived as a more traditional post and has had to learn to be instinctive from the high-post. Arguably, Sims has a better complement of cutters around him than did Monroe (players 2-9), which improves Sims’ assist numbers.
hoyaparanormal - January 9, 2012
I agree that Sims has better cutters
and Monroe was (perhaps?) surrounded by better shooters. I feel very confident when Henry gets the ball at the top of the key that he is going to make something good happen . . . even better than when he gets it on the block.

The Wright Stuff...
Wright has been tweeting all day about this game…the Hoyas better bring it and avenge last year. I am not driving down to Verizon and missing the melt down on the Bachelor to watch sloppy play—turnovers, missed free throws…our boys better do this for Chris! GO HOYAS!

Probably because I wasn't able to watch the WVU debacle:
FearlessMindless Predictions for Cincinatti Game:- Otto hits at least one three pointer and grabs 10+ rebounds
- Markel breaks out of his funk, makes 50% of his threes, and plays tough defense
- Nate and Mikael combine for 6+ offensive boards and get Gates in early foul trouble
- Jason reverts (in a positive fashion) to his fearless driving and foul-drawing ways
- Hollis hits two key jumpers in second half
- Cinci goes cold from three in second half
- Hoyas obtain first double-digit victory in Big East play 70 – 58

UConn-WVU rooting interest?
I generally hate both teams and coaches.
UConn has more BE losses so far, but seems more likely to be at the top of the standings in late February. Plus WVU owns the tiebreaker over us.
I like Connecticut better as a state (Mom’s basement is in the suburbs of New Haven, after all) but that has never made me like the Huskies before.
But only one of these teams is (at least temporarily) loyal to the Big East. Go Huskies.

No
DHB Enterprises - January 9, 2012
it's amazing how tight this game has been
consistently
eatthatbox09 - January 9, 2012
Who isn't amazed at consistent tightness?
Hoya Annoya - January 9, 2012
and it shouldn't have been
considering that we are a ranked global powerhouse playing at home
soya - January 9, 2012
We're playing a middling Big East team at home
And have zero answer on defense. I am sad.
TouomouIsMyHomie - January 9, 2012
Cincy was picked 5th ... We were picked 10th...
GotOneRunning - January 9, 2012
Yep. Before the season started.
TouomouIsMyHomie - January 9, 2012
yeah
Cincy had a really bad start, but they are not a bad team.
Chris Haines - January 9, 2012
Agreed. Just frustrating.
We don’t enjoy an obvious talent gap against any Big East opponent so every game is a kick in the sack. A cakewalk – just one – would be nice for the confidence…
Looking for reasons to be deluded.
TouomouIsMyHomie - January 9, 2012
Henry's mid range game

Mr. obvious guy says: no defense
SomebodyBuyAustinaSteak - January 9, 2012
WHERE IS TRAWICK
The Lorry Michel Backrub - January 9, 2012
Did not like that baseline jumper by Sims
Too early in the shot clock for that. Guessing JT3 wasn’t a huge fan either, since he got Lubick up right after it.
NewsToTom - January 9, 2012
Yeah
That was definitely a “I’m feeling it and don’t remember what’s going on with the game” shot. We had numbers and ended up with a Sims 12 footer. No bueno.
JGD - January 9, 2012

DHB Enterprises - January 9, 2012
So JGD said Hollis should get 15-20 shots a game

Prepping for basketball season like the second coming of Hurricane Andrew must be depressing.

close loss, everyone calm down
more problematic is that these are dumb losses involving a lot of sloppiness
eatthatbox09 - January 9, 2012
exactly like 08-09
SomebodyBuyAustinaSteak - January 9, 2012
This wasn't some unlucky loss...
Where the wrong evenly matched team wins. They had 2 guys who could score and they beat us every single time in the paint. Meanwhile we gave them 17 TO’s. Thats an actual problem, not unsolvable but highly troubling.
genetichoya - January 9, 2012
hardly disagreeing that it isn't troubling
just saying we’re not on a one-way street to total meltdown

and we’d have won
Hoya Saxual - January 9, 2012
WHERE THE FUCK WAS TRAWICK
Needed a boost towards the end, why not bring him in for some defensive intensity on the perimeter? Instead, we switch 25 feet from the basket and have Porter get beat at least twice in a row
The Lorry Michel Backrub - January 9, 2012
finally
The real Hoyas full of turnovers, lack of intensity and bad coachin. JTIII called 2 timeouts on one possession for that slop. No one movin. Clark n Hollis dont sniff the ball? Fuk

HoyafromBmore - January 9, 2012
Team effort, but this one starts with the coach
Did we ever have the right defensive unit out there? It seemed like we were always going big, with Henry/Nate/Otto on the floor (likely due to Nate’s surprising play tonight), and it left us slow on both ends.

this one is on 3. we got beat by the 4 guard lineup.

Getting the ball stolen on an under the basket in bounds
it’s not like they are even running a play, 3 guys run to corners, and 1 guy to mid court. Those turnovers cannot happen.

That’s…almost uplifting.
J-Wall's Mom's Broom - January 9, 2012
I think it's actually really depressing
DHB Enterprises - January 9, 2012
I'm taking it as
This is a team that can play very well, but has a turnover problem (hopefully only for the moment). For a squad of mostly underclassmen, that does not depress me.
J-Wall's Mom's Broom - January 9, 2012
Fair enough
But given the turnover problems that have been endemic with the last few Hoya teams, it has me in cynical mode right now.

well our two seniors combined for more turnovers than the cincy team.

but hollis took maybe 1 shot the whole second half? Either they played truly amazing defense or…what I have no idea.
genetichoya - January 9, 2012
they shut down hollis
he barely touched the bal
Hire Esherick - January 9, 2012
i think the problem isn't the offense
it’s more that Hollis can get completely taken out of the game at times by the other team, and has no way of affecting the game when he’s being targeted by the defense as of right now. It seems like he can’t even get open.
El Scorcho! - January 9, 2012
any one player can be taken out of a team if the defense goes at him
gotta find ways to score other ways

Can’t just harp on Hollis
TouomouIsMyHomie - January 9, 2012

but Hollis needs to be able to do something except spot up for 3. He doesn’t seem to get into the game any other way recently.

we probably should have lost marquette and won tonight. its college basketball. this stuff happens.
we have a young team and emerging stars. the problems we saw tonight are fixable. our turnovers are from sloppy passing – trying to get too good of a look at the basket.
we’ll be fine. this is a tournament team.
Hire Esherick - January 9, 2012
Well summarized
Thank you for the level-headed perspective
J-Wall's Mom's Broom - January 9, 2012
Agree.
This team has shown in early season games that they have the intangibles (like chemistry) that can’t be taught. They just need to be able to capitalize on that under pressure. If making good, confident passes is the biggest thing we need to fix…I’m okay with that.
Hoya Saxual - January 9, 2012
In the last four years
We are a combined 1-10 against West Virginia and Cincinnati. I’m going to save my judgment on our team until after the Pitt game (the next four), as follows:
4-0: legitimate Elite 8 team that just cannot beat WVU and Cincy
3-1: NCAA tournament team that has an outside shot at making the second weekend.
2-2: Bubblicious at best. Hello, NIT game at McDonough.
1-3: 08-09 all over again.
0-4: ready to jump off a cliff
Vee Sanford's Next-door Neighbor - January 9, 2012

happening as it has, year after year
tjm62 - January 9, 2012
what happens year after year?
losing two games in a row?
Hire Esherick - January 9, 2012
I think it's coaching.
I’m usually a big JTIII fan (and don’t think he’s at fault for most of our losses), but going 1-10 against a pair of opponents shows unpreparedness. Same schemes, different players, same results.
Vee Sanford's Next-door Neighbor - January 9, 2012

Let's review my week in sports...
My Penguins are basically holding public tryouts to fill out the roster after all the injuries, and haven’t won in, like, 3 weeks.
The Hoyas have now dropped two in a row…

Hollis Thompson, 1.8 seconds to go, at Alabama
They can do it…they just need to find a way to do it consistently to be a great team. They may not be ready to be a great team, but we knew that coming into the season, didn’t we?
J-Wall's Mom's Broom - January 9, 2012
that is the team

That's true

shwonkBC - January 9, 2012
In other news, it took eight quarters for either Alabama or LSU to score a touchdown.
(’Bama scored.)

It took 4 quarters...
for lsu to cross midfield…
TheDoctorIsIn - January 9, 2012
Doesn't seem like our talent level is appreciably higher (or lower) than anyone else in the Big East
Slogfests like this are going to be 50/50 all year long
TouomouIsMyHomie - January 9, 2012
Not jumping off of a cliff, but let's keep it real here
-Our out of conference wins are ‘ok’ at best.
-Our win at Louisville is ‘ok’. Fukn Notre Dame just beat them there.
-We have a complete inability to stop anybody from driving and that has been the case for the last 5 years. We just can’t recruit good enough athletes for some reason.
-Our coach still has absolutely no idea how to run a play a) out of a timeout b) for the hottest shooter on the floor that hasn’t missed in the first half and has 1 FUKN SHOT IN THE SECOND HALF c) know that you can’t continue to play man to man against a team that drives to the hole at will and either scores or gets fouled on every possession. EVERY POSSESSION. Seriously.
-Enough with the “we’re young” bullshit. We start 2 seniors and a junior that has graduated. That is just an excuse.
Up 6 with 6 to go, and we are outscored by 10. At home. We were outplayed and outcoached. I think this one is 100% on JTIII. Pathetic job by him. The tough matchups for us are teams that are athletic, rebound, and play good d. Basically the exact opposite of us.
I hate to say it, but nothing in the last 3 years leads me to believe that this team will do anything but free fall from here. I love the Hoyas and will cheer them on every game, but come on…this shit is getting really old.
brandonbowmansfootistoobig - January 9, 2012
and not to mention
The ease with which we give the ball away all game long, especially in crunch time is something that I’ve never seen from a top 20 college basketball team in my 33 years. It’s startling.
brandonbowmansfootistoobig - January 9, 2012
Regarding your dismissal of the youth factor
We may start three upperclassmen, but we also have stretches of 1 senior and 4 freshmen on the floor at a time.
J-Wall's Mom's Broom - January 9, 2012
To be fair, the BE sucks across the board
Nova and Pitt are a joke, Uconn just got swept by the NJ teams, etc.
tjm62 - January 9, 2012
Unfair. 08-09 was disaster. 09-10 our best scored got diagnosed with diabetes, we still made a strong run at end of season and lost abysmal game in tourney. ’10-11 our leader broke his hand after we had won 9 out of 10.
Those arent excuses, they are realities.
This team will be fine. Porter had the worst game of his career. It is early January, lot of basketball left.
Hire Esherick - January 9, 2012
I think Porter's worst game
was actually West Virginia, this was his second worst
The Lorry Michel Backrub - January 9, 2012
I'm interested in why JTIII left Porter out there
I’m wondering if he’s started coaching for the tournament more
shwonkBC - January 9, 2012
which tournament
the BE on a Tuesday?
The Lorry Michel Backrub - January 9, 2012
Not sure he had another option
Lubick would get beat. Whittington already got eaten alive. Trawick is an option but JT3 probably believed that Porter on offenses is more valuable than Trawick on defense. For most of the reason, that has been true. Just not tonight.
Hire Esherick - January 9, 2012
and i cant type
Hire Esherick - January 9, 2012
He's been dependable as a scorer and not a liability on defense thus far
With that as a general precedent (and no dfinitively better option), why would he replace him?
Hoya Saxual - January 9, 2012
Trawick is the move there
Everyone, including that dolt Tim Welsh, saw that their entire offense down the stretch was exploit the mismatch of Porter on the perimeter. Their guards got to the basket at will. You have to make an adjustment. Sims not rotating early enough didnt help matters either.
