(Perspectives After The Jump)

View from the Student Section - A Perspective from Campus:
Well I've been out of commission for the last day and a half with a cold? Stomach bug? Who knows? All I know is that I feel better than last year when I went to the Louisville game with a fever and had to sit down during every media timeout. Hmmm UConn. I dislike them. I will be printing out a thick document with the title page "Jim Calhoun's NCAA Rulebook". Every subsequent page will be blank. If I'm JT3 I'm going to make this game very simple, I would dare anyone except Jeremy Lamb to beat me. We are due for a good shooting game and the only person who can keep up with that is Lamb. Boatright-gate is over, but all you have to do is expect him to be out of control, and not foul him when he attempts circus shots. I like the Hoya Blue email advertising Dickie V will be there, so you better get there early, but hey, I hate Dickie V. However, I'll be there early. Go Hoyas. We need this one boys.
View from the Court Side Seats - A Perspective from OldHoya:
OldHoya would first like to recognize the photo stylings of wadetandy. The computer is still a confusing and frightening thing at times but OldHoya's friends dutifully passed along the picture of his grandson in casual headband gear prior to the Rutgers game and that was well-appreciated.
And now turning to the game, there's something rotten in the State of Connecticut and it's been that way for some time. Jim Calhoun has always been a weasel and a whiner (nearly on par with Jim Boeheim) but he was usually able to keep his team together and focused on winning. That seems to have all fallen apart this season and a team with at least two lottery picks on it has fallen from the Top 25? Crazy talk.
UConn memories run deep and unfortunately, the clearest memory is one that the editors of Casual Hoya remember well - Ray Allen at MSG during the Big East Tournament. Used to be easy to spend an entire weekend in the Big Apple and enjoy a few days of high level hoop. Now, we've got five days spread over an entire week and there's no telling what will happen once SMU comes to town. Way back when, Allen Iverson was dominating the court and an outstanding Georgetown team had played its way to the Big East championship. This was a particularly dislikable UConn team with Travis Knight leading the way but Ray Allen was a standout and Georgetown played him well...for almost the entire game. This is neither the time nor place to re-live that game's final moments, but the Hoyas walked off the court Big East runner-up and were handed a 2-seed in the Dance as a result.
Thanks for bringing up the bad memories. Let's go make some good ones
View from the Enemy- A Perspective from our Sleeping With The Enemy Interview:
The way this year is gone in the Big East I'm hesitant to make a prediction before knowing if Jim Burr is working the game or not, but I think in Boatright's second game back UConn will start to click some more. I'll take the Huskies 68-66, with the caveat that the higher scoring the game is the better it bodes for UConn. If both teams are in the 70s, I'll have a lot more confidence in UConn. If Georgetown can slow down the game and limit the number of possessions, it bodes well for the Hoyas.

JahidiLikesPie Nervous Level: |
LOW |
Saturday afternoon took A LOT out of me. The pink shoe revelation, the team not showing up, the price of A BUD LIGHT PITCHER and the outcome caused me to realize that I needed some time to myself to RELAX. I gathered the pieces of my broken phone, paid the manager of that nice place in Tribeca for the chairs that I smashed in the basement, apologized to everyone that was subjected to the mixture of profanity and spittle that spewed from my beet-red face, and walked to my favorite hotel bar. It was here, with a final Manhattan in my hand, that I realized that I had spent my entire account of nerves for the season. As a result, I am not nervous about this game. Hell, in all likelihood, I won't even see the first half due to a client dinner. I am ok with this fact.
We are facing another team that is fighting for it's conference life. They are as talented AND as perplexing as any team in the country. Who knows which team will show up on either bench? I am resolved to not think further about this game prior to the tip. I HOPE we win, but I will NOT be nervous...
Like a Hindu Cow.
View from the Sportsbook (via DonBest) - A Perspective from Vegas:
The Line: Georgetown -3.5. Over/under 126.5.
The Hoyas have been killing me against the spread of late, stumbling to a 1-7 record ATS in its last 8 games. Georgetown can and probably should win this game by a dozen points in what will be its first primetime game at the Verizon Center in front of what should be the largest crowd of the year. BUT IF THEY DO NOT THIS IS THE LAST TIME I WILL TAKE GEORGETOWN ALL SEASON. I need this win so I can start buying Teddy organic dog food again.
The pick is Georgetown -3.5. Final score Hoyas 68 - Huskies 63.
Casual Hoya is 10-9-1 ATS this season.
Last season: 18-14.
Overall 50-31-1.www.CasualHoya.com: Where Your Money Stays And Plays.

A coworker has a nice
Puffy vineyard vines winter coat. What’s up with that?
I’m not getting into the 96 big east final (CRUSHING) but to add insult to injury we then were ousted in the elite 8 by CHEATING John Cal & an ineligible Marcus Camby.
Great, now Im in a foul mood. Thank god I brought an opened bottle of wine with me today knowing I wouldn’t get out of work in time for a real happy hour. Yep, its in my desk drawer. Planned on drinking out of a paper cup on my way to verizon. Classy.

Defense has been great, and with all those UCONN misses, good that we’re not allowing second chances. Need to keep that up.

There were players somewhat nearby underneath him...
So the argument could be made that he hung up there for safety. It was borderline.

Nate swiping at Drummond like some deranged yeti
dumb foul

On the other hand
At least it was a hard enough foul to make Drummond see stars for a second there

Hoya Saxual - February 1, 2012
2nd Half here we come.....
I think the 2-3 zone has been very effective thus far. UConn can’t hit the outside jumper, so let’s stay in that until they start making some shots. Lubick should just be a minutes eatter right now. I do not want him in at the end of the game if we need some big buckets, he also can’t shoot FT’s. Let’s keep it up Hoyas!!

He drove for at least one good layup tonight and has been doing some nice rebounding work.
So, no. Not at all.

we don’t execute enough on offense to extend leads typically, we turn it over way too much or take really bad shots that essentially gift points to the other team. Not casual.

Sims was actually able to finish inside when he wasn’t turning it over, Hollis had the best rebounding game he’s had all season, we got some solid minutes from the bench (particularly Porter – as always – and Hopkins) and Starks stayed out of foul trouble. Clark was all-around performing the way a senior needs to.
It wasn’t a stellar game, but we decidedly outplayed them.

If you didn’t see him keeping balls alive on the boards..
Getting after it on the defensive end, and diving for loose balls.. I don’t know what to tell you.. Would be interesting to hear what you didn’t like about his game tonight. We don’t need everybody to be a star. We just need everybody to play there role, that’s what playing like a team means. He did that tonight give him his props.
Liked the new look on offense from three.. First time this year we used the double high post.. Gave the offense a different look. really nice
yaboynyp - February 1, 2012

Look man
I watched the same game you did. He had a better game than he’s had, fine, I’ll concede that. In fact, I may go so far as to say he was a more effective player tonight than Otto was. Despite that, by no means am I willing to agree to your point of view until I see some gosh darn consistency from the guy.
TexaHoya - February 1, 2012
what is my point of view?
i just think lubick needs to play. and benching him hurts the team.
Hire Esherick - February 1, 2012
That, precisely
is the point of view I disagree with. If he’s getting bench minutes anyway, why not just finish the deal and make Otto the starter? How exactly does it “hurt the team” if Lubick isn’t on the floor for the first 5 minutes? Do I need to remind you how the first 5 minutes of THIS game went?
TexaHoya - February 1, 2012
i didnt say he needs to start. i said he needs to play. i disagree with you everytime you say “nate cant play” or “he isnt an important part of the team”
georgetown didnt play defense for the first four minutes of the game, which included 2 with lubick and 2 with porter.
Hire Esherick - February 1, 2012
The reason why is..
As a coach you have to coach games for today but also keep tomorrow in mind… It’s important for 3 to play Nate to get Hopkins some minutes because we’re gonna need these guys over the next couple of years to be successful.
It’s the same phylosophy that Boehslime used with Fab Melo last season. Bigs take longer to develop (Henry Sims) so you have to be patient with them and their development.
Watching Henry and seeing how slow of a starter he is makes me wonder was Henry really always this same guy but 3 just had a quick trigger on him.. He’s making the same mistakes he has mad 4 years here. The difference is 3 is letting him work through it now, when in previous years he would have been parked on the bench.
A lot of posters who saw Henry in High School rave about how skilled he was at St. Joes. Maybe he was mismanaged and coach has learned from his mistakes, They all can’t be Greg Monroe..
That is why I believe we need to play Nate
yaboynyp - February 1, 2012

Great win and there were actually students in the stands
Melvin M. Tuggle III - February 1, 2012
I wouldn't get too too excited about this win...
Yes the Hoyas played great tonight. I thought JT3 did a great job in the beginning of the game of switching from man to the 2-3 zone, that really halted the UConn offense in that 14-15min stretch. But you have to admit, UConn played horrible today. Gtown was 10times more physical on the rebounding aspect, and UConn could not save a shot to save their lives. Considering Clark and Hollis were both in foul trouble early in the second half, if UConn coulda made any type of run, the game would’ve been so much closer. Great win by the Hoyas, but I’m not too sure if we looked that good, or if UConn was that bad.

why when another team plays well its georgetown’s fault and when another team plays poorly its their own fault.
Hire Esherick - February 1, 2012
Never understood

WarmupEwing - February 1, 2012
Kind of agree with a little of both arguments
UCONN hasn’t been at their best this season, for whatever reason, but I wouldn’t call them a bad team. We made them look pretty awful for some significant stretches in this game with our defensive effort, which I think is definitely a positive sign. Our upperclassmen stepping up was also a good sign, as was the physicality on the boards and hustle for loose balls…any number of things.
So, yes, UCONN is not the highest quality opponent this year, but it still goes down as a good win in my book, and a step in the right direction for getting out of this mini slump – if we maintain that level of effort and our offense works as well (or better, it wasn’t THAT hot) as it did tonight, we will definitely be able to handle better teams as we did the Huskies tonight.
J-Wall's Mom's Broom - February 1, 2012
Very reasonable
At this point in the season, there are no “bad” wins or “good losses”. We did what we needed to do to win this game, and we won pretty convincingly. We missed a bunch of opportunities and need to work on those, but one has to feel good about the overall effort. Any Hoya fan who doesn’t relish a win over UConn, no matter how it comes, is no true Hoya in my book.
WarmupEwing - February 1, 2012
Wooow this.. especially the last sentence..
yaboynyp - February 2, 2012
I do think the UCONN lack of passing really made our zone look good
when teams (like Pitt) make that extra pass, our zone looks a whole lot worse. Usually when the ball gets in the paint, our zone help defense comes off their man to double team the ball leaving someone wide open near the basket.
Even sometimes in last night’s game, UCONN drove it to the basket then passed to the open man near the basket, who inexplicably did not shoot. Had they done so, they wouldnt have shot so pathetically last night.
SomebodyBuyAustinaSteak - February 2, 2012
We didn’t zone Pitt...
That was part of what was so maddening.. They kept running brush screen off the post and curling with there guards. Once the guards received the entry we would double them and leave an easy dump down to Robinson or Peterson for a layup or dunk..

That was as satisfying
As a 4 pound dump. Hollis was outstanding. It makes me very happy for him because there were at least 4 NBA scouts in the bldg. needless to say, Lamb slipped down some draft boards tonight. I would think most of the scouts were looking at Drummond, and left with some notes on Hollis. Drummond needs work. I have seen him thrice now, and have yet to be impressed. Hollis came up with huge boards in traffic all night. I also thought his defense was strong. Love the zone usage. I thought this was JT3’s best coaching job this year. Great substitutions, switching defenses, and even a score off an inbounds play. Gonna go pour myself a glass of kentucky’s finest and wait for Henry to flush it on sports center. Enjoy the win, clowns.
