Casual wiseman sleepyhoya talks Georgetown's domination of Syracuse in the 80s:

Thanks to BashfulHoya we got an inside look at the Georgetown - Syracuse rivalry in the 1970's. My insights are not quite as close to the court, but cover the 80's, when the rivalry officially turned red hot. To put it simply, the Hoyas completely dominated the Orange in the 1980's. The numbers don't lie. Here is a small sample of the beatdown decade:
1) In the 1980's we played Syracuse 28 times, we won 20 of them including at least one game at Manley Field House.
2) Georgetown beat Syracuse 4 times in the Big East Championship game.
3) Georgetown won 6 Big East Championships, Syracuse won 2. It should be noted that one of those championships came when the tournament was mysteriously played at the Carrier Dome. That seminal experience of 5 days for civilized people in the vast wasteland of upstate NY led the Big East to permanently change the location to Madison Square Garden.
4) Georgetown beat Syracuse in the first ever Big East Tournament Final at Madison Square Garden.
5) The year Syracuse somehow managed to make it to the NCAA finals - you guessed it -Georgetown beat them three times.
Georgetown domination of Syracuse after The Jump:

As Syracuse prepares to slink off to the ACC, it's possible that we won't see the Hoyas in the Carrier Dome anytime soon. The Big East will also be different, but no worse for the loss of Syracuse. The Big East became an institution in the 1980's. Looking at the numbers this much is clear - Georgetown made the Big East and the Big East made Syracuse. We wish you the best in a second tier conference and we really hope you enjoy your home and home series with the college basketball powerhouse Boston College. (I believe Harvard has beat them three years in a row meaning when the Eagles eventually beat the Crimson students will have to rush the floor)
Now that we've got that all out of the way, let's get to the best games of the decade. Because we averaged 2 wins over Cuse a year, there is a lot to choose from. I've actually got to start with a game in 1979. That was the year Georgetown beat Syracuse in the finals of the ECAC tournament to get a bid to the tournament. The game was played at Cole Field House at the University of Maryland. Syracuse was ranked and loaded with talent. Led by Roosevelt Bouie and Louis Orr -- the Bouie and Louie show - the Orange were heavily favored. But it wasn't just that show, Dale Shackleford, Marty Head and freshman Danny Schayes, the son of hall of famer Dolph Schayes had Georgetown outmanned and outnumbered. What Syracuse wasn't expecting was a packed gym of rabid Hoya fans (yes we can fill a gym or arena) and John Duren and Craig Shelton, two of the toughest players ever to play the game. We had them from the opening tip, and the unranked Hoyas pulled off the upset the set the stage for the dominant decade ahead.
It wasn't our first victory of the 1980's, but perhaps the most satisfying was the night we closed Manley Arena. As I've written before on the blog, this is the night Georgetown basketball arrived. The stage was set for a celebration in Syracuse and a big first half lead had the party started. But Shelton and Duren along with newcomer Sleepy Floyd had news for the Syracuse faithful in the second half. The swagger of the 1980s Hoyas was born when John Thompson Jr. grabbed that microphone and declared Manley Arena officially closed. He launched a team that won a national championship, went to three final fours in four years and featured two of the most dominant big men in college basketball history.
The best actual game may have been the Big East Tournament Final in 1984. We had a great team and were peaking at the right time. But Syracuse was tough and Dwayne Pearl Washington was not going to be denied. Patrick and Pearl matched punches for 40 minutes both scoring 27 points. We prevailed in no small part because Michael Graham threw a punch but JT Jr. convinced the ref it was a flagrant foul instead of a four shot ejection (before the Orange trolls lose their mind, let's remember the guy he threw the punch against later threw one at his girlfriend). Jim Boeheim, in the second worst press conference of his life, whined afterwards that the "best team" had not won.
Jim - we beat you three times that year and won the National Championship - not bad for the team you thought you were better than.
My last highlighted game comes again in the Big East Finals in 1987. Syracuse went to the Finals that year but lost. For those whose hatred of Syracuse is pure, you'll remember they got beat by a young guard on a 17-foot shot from around the same place on the same Superdome floor. It's not that I'm competitive, but I'd much rather have a dagger from Michael Jordan than Keith Smart. Anyway on the way to the Big East Finals, Syracuse had to play Georgetown three times - in Landover, the Carrier Dome and Madison Square Garden. Even getting close to a national championship, Boeheim must have wondered that, even in a down year for Georgetown and playing in the Finals if he had the best team in the Big East. Reggie Williams and the Miracles proved once again we can beat Syracuse anytime, anywhere. We know it and so does Mr. Boeheim.
It was a great decade for the Big East and a great decade for Georgetown. Syracuse will miss the Big East a lot more than the Big East will miss Syracuse. It's hard to imagine a full rocking Carrier Dome for the Demon Deacons, Hurricanes or Seminoles. Enjoy the football, and if you're ever in NYC the first week or March, stop in the Garden - they'll be playing some real basketball in there.
Have fun in Greensboro.

Making of the Big East
A lot of that great rise in the 1980’s was pushed along by St. John’s, BC, and (unfortunately) ’Nova.
DrTox - February 7, 2012
And...
Seton Hall and Providence. I think BC and Pitt (enjoy the annual Duke-Carolina invitational) were the only two schools in the conference not to make a final four in the 80’s.
Esteban d' Amur - February 7, 2012
agree
on St Johns, BC and Nova especially. Was really focused on Syracuse and what the Big East did for them, not the other way around. Remember in the first half of the 80’s, i think they were in the NIT as often as the NCAA. First big rivalry of the Big East was Georgetown-St. Johns.

That is when Boeheim developed his reputation as a whiner. Always on the outside looking in.

The only thing I'll miss about Syracuse:
Delivery beer. Saved our road trip one year when we arrived at our accommodations and discovered that we had drank everything we brought on the way up there. Possibly one of the greatest phone conversations I’ve ever heard.
“Hi, can I get 64 beers for delivery, please?”
[Vendor: You have to order at least one slice of pizza to have beer delivered.]
“OK, can I get 64 beers and a slice of cheese?”
And the delivery man even brought it straight to the back door of our sketchy Motel 6 room. Ah, the memories.

SkinsCapsHoyasCocks - February 7, 2012
For best games, I can't possibly forget 1985.
We played ‘Nova four times that year. We won the first three, but all went to OT. In the infamous fourth one, Rollie Massimino and Ed Pinckney finally got it right and knocked off the fearsome #1 and Defending Champ Hoyas. ’Nova exhibited enormous patience and shot 77% from the floor. You don’t need an OT when you do that.
That was was the last year (I think) if not the actual last NCAA game without a shot clock. I have read that a guy who studied that NCAA final game said that the 45-sec clock actually would not have made a difference
That was the only time three of the Final Four came from one conference. For you young guys, the third was the bunch from Queens, with Lou Carnesecca of the striped sweater and Chris Mullins of the sweet stroke.
DrTox - February 7, 2012
The 1987 Big East Championship was fantastic and the one
that stays with me the most. An absolutely loaded Orange team was beat decisively by a collection of freshmen, a yet to blossom Charles Smith and, of course, the great Reggie Williams, who if I recall correctly, dunked on the last play of the game for a 10 point victory. It was all made better by the fact that my brother was a Syracuse fan. Good times.
ReggieandtheMiracles - February 7, 2012
Same era produced two of the most beautiful moments in NCAA tournament history
at least for me.
1982: The postcard of JTII with his arm around Fred Brown at game’s end, comforting him after the shocking hand-off to James Worthy that ended the game. I have no memory of MJ’s legendary dagger, but I will never forget just the stunned, then delirious look on Worthy’s face.
1984: The same JTII welcoming the same Fred Brown back to the bench with a few seconds to play, capping the greatest season in Hoya history.
DrTox - February 7, 2012
A Minor Historical Correction
Sleepy Floyd was the leading scorer for the Hoya team that beat the Orange at Cole. He was no longer a newcomer when his free throws put away the Orange at Manley in his sophomore year.

We checked out for a good seven years during the mid 2000s, but we’re back and Syracuse will surely miss the Big East far more than we will miss them. The demise of Big East basketball is vastly overstated. And last I checked, the ACC is two major programs and rest mid-majors. Good luck tomorrow night and we’ll see you Sunday at Verizon.

Esteban d' Amur - February 7, 2012
This is laughable delusional
First there is the monetary aspect of this. Gtown is about to take massive hit in funding. The second Syracuse and Pitt leave (possibly followed by Uconn at a later date), ESPN can renegotiate the contract. The BE goes from a BCS payday to a high midmajor. Mostly this is because the commish is an idiot and allowed bball schools to have a vote over issues they had nothing to do with (like football). Gtown can’t even sell out its arena without some stupid gimmick (which based on the emails I receive happen often) or a team people actually care about coming to town. The lack of revenue means worse facilities and eventually worse recruits.
Even if Gtown and St Johns were the class of the BE (and lets be clear, they are not), things change over time. Claiming that you guys made the BE is slightly similar to Notre Dame claiming its the king of college football. Being the king of the BE (after we leave) is about as important as being the worlds largest producer of VHS tapes.
I’m sad that you guys don’t have a football team, because you would be a great fit for the ACC otherwise. Still we are off to a better place while you guys fly halfway around the country pretending to play schools we all known no one cares about.

Add this to the list of unreadable rambling I didn't read today.
WallaceAtTheLineShooting2 - February 7, 2012
Drink the kool-aid
mixed by the ESPN idiots that overpaid for rights for BCS bowl games that will likely disappear.
I have a feeling Cuse and Pitt are in for a rude reality check when they enter an ACC that also has a large disparity between the haves and have nots (note: Cuse is a have not). There is a lot more money to be made off of football and today’s movers will be the ones left out down the road.
Just an opinion, and you’re entitled to your own, even if it is just copied and pasted from the instigators of conference realignment.
Hire Esherick - February 7, 2012
The ACC pays out differently than the BE
If the ACC followed the same payout structure of the BE, I would agree with you. However all revenue from media/ bowl games etc is split evenly between all the schools of the ACC. So when both VT and Clemson make a BCS bowl, each of those schools gets the same cut as Duke (minus their bowl expenses). Its how WF can stay relevant in a conference that doesn’t even care if they exist. Those in bowl games keep a larger share in the BE so it highlights the have and the have nots, esp for a BCS.
I don’t like conference realignment, but the idea that the BE is some giant happy family is bullshit too. Most of the teams in the conference are dead weight. Yes I will miss playing Nova, Gtown and Uconn but I will happily trade games against USF, WVU Depaul and Marquette for any ACC matchup. The BE isn’t what it used to be for a while now. This isn’t like leaving a family behind, its like leaving a public high school. There are people you will miss, but there are plenty more people you could care less about.
CapitalOrange - February 8, 2012
When I said haves and have-nots, I meant on-field performance.
That is exactly the reason why certain teams in the ACC are in for reality check. Not now. Not next year. But soon. How long until teams that bring in the money for the conference try to negotiate a Texas-like deal? How happy do you think VT and Clemson are that they support the programs of Duke and Wake, that make very little efforts to field competitive squads? What happens when the BCS dissolves under immense political and public pressure? Breakup fees are minuscule compared to the money some of these “haves” generate and are forced to split with the “have-nots”.
These are all things that will determine the “financial success” and “stability” that Syracuse and Pitt left the Big East in search for.
Big East isn’t a happy family. It is an island of misfit toys. But don’t spout the ESPN nonsense that everything is stable and all is well now. Things are going to change, and it is my honest opinion that Cuse, like BC, will be forgotten in football.
Hire Esherick - February 8, 2012
I get your thinking
But VT and Clemson are not anywhere near the power of Texas. There are only a handful of schools that have that kind of power. Could FSU, NCSU and VT bolt for the SEC, possibly. But what would it really cost the conference? The BCS payout is not that big of a payout since its split evenly. Its about a million dollars and the breakups are far more than that. The real money is in the overall TV deals. Geographically speaking the ACC is in ideal population areas.
I don’t think everything is fine and I’m concerned that the big 5 could break off and leave the NCAA behind, ruining march madness. However things aren’t looking down for the vast vast majority of the schools in the what is basically now the Big 4 conferences + Texas and OU. If you were talking about the Big 12, which is a house of cards, I would agree with you.
CapitalOrange - February 8, 2012
Think of the 1000's
of Cuse err Hoya donors leaving after next year’s game. Bottomline, if Cuse wants a game in DC it’ll call George Mason whom will gladly travel over to the VZ Center for another Cuse home game in DC.
I’m sure your AD will “see the light” and continue a series with the Cuse. Wouldn’t you rather be on national TV versus playing on ESPN Ocho vs SMU, CFU, Cougar High?
TexanMark - February 7, 2012
But wouldn’t that require Cuse leaving NY for an out-of-conference game?
Hire Esherick - February 7, 2012
Also
You do realize that Cuse’s rival per ACC scheduling will be BC, right? Cool, just checking. That is how much value your new conference believes Syracuse brings. Games against the poster child for why leaving a conference purely for money is a stupid move.
Meanwhile, Georgetown will still have games against established rivals they have played since the conference formed.

Hoya fans always disappoints, esp their own team by not showing up
for home games in D.C.

Huh.
Congratulations on booing an Army veteran. Georgetown….nothing more than a decidedly more pompous Rutgers, jerseytornado.

says the man whose team's fans THROW BOTTLES AT PEOPLE
and, let’s not forget, throwing bottles @ Georgetown fans or players makes you the Canadian equivalent of the Bayi Rockets and their fans. Stay Classy Cuse!
(and I hate rutgers. got the f*ck out of that state after growing up there. now in philly. probably have booed you if you walk around in syracuse gear)

That person was actually mistaken
The person was not an army veteran. The contest was just sponsored by the army.

Add one more to the list

For a program that hasn’t accomplished much since 2003, Syracuse sure has a ton of problems.

Wrong Sport....
…but true. If we are going to get into a discussion on football team woes, of any variety, we’d win that argument for sure.
Rarely do you see that sort of thing at programs that play Gentleman’s Football. My brother was a receiver at Harvard, so I understand that well.
Best to your Lilliputian program in the Patriot League. Sorry, Georgetown Football doesn’t exactly get my heart rate up. And from the # of fans you get at games….yours, either.

Back to Basketball!
Since you guys love to live in the ancient past so much, the January 30, 1995 game, held in Landover (even a ton of ’Cuse fans in the stands back then) is concluding on ECL right now.
Enjoy!

Back to basketball??!
I asked this yesterday and still haven’t gotten a response from any of the Cuse trolls on this blog:

How come....
Hoya players with post-graduate felonies isn’t an option? I’d rather talk about that, since no one actually wants to talk about tonight’s game.

About what I expected
Even the Cuse trolls can’t explain/defend the actions of its athletes and lack of oversight by the Athletic Department. All this stuff happened in the last five years! Joke of a program.
