View from the Student Section - A Perspective from Campus:
My hatred for Syracuse runs deep. That's what happens when your first two encounters with this rivalry included the Dajuan Summers dunk fest over Kristof Ongenaet and then getting glass bottles thrown at you. I hold no sympathy for anything bad that happens to Syracuse University. That being said they are a damn good basketball team. However Fab Melo still hasn't proven himself fully as he hasn't faced the best big man in the conference, Henry Sims. If the Hoyas make this a half court game I really like our chances. Our defense has been the best it's been in the last four years since the Pitt debacle. Hollis Thompson is also due for a big shooting night. I never think we should win in Syracuse but we always have a chance. This matchup is no different. Cuck fuse.

It's a damn shame that this Big East rivalry is coming to an end. More so than any other, this game has been one that fans both looked forward to and dreaded as Georgetown and Syracuse have consistently had strong teams and produced great games. And though he's loathe to admit it, OldHoya does have at least one friend who graduated from Syracuse, and the annual Cafe Milano wager may come to an end after this year.
As has been well documented, this rivalry really began with JT2 letting everyone know that Manley Fieldhouse was officially closed. This led to a long running cheer of "What's the streak at Manley now?" when Cuse visited DC but sadly, came to and end in the days before blogs and the ability to keep such lore alive.
The rivalry really intensified during the 80s as the Hoyas and Orangemen were consistently at the top of the conference. The best games of the series were in the 80s, and of course, the cream of the crop were with Patrick at center, particularly in the Big East Championship in 1984. The Hoyas met Syracuse in the championship game again in 1987 and 1989 (triumphant both times), a span during which Cuse boasted arguably its most awful player of all time: Rony Seikaly.
Though there were plenty of great games in between, a particularly sweet moment came on February 24, 2002. Yes, the date that Syracuse elected to decree the hideous floor inside the Carrier Dome, "Jim Boeheim Court." This was no great Georgetown team but behind Gerald Riley (since immortalized in the now defunct 'dress like a Hoya challenge') and Kevin Braswell, Georgetown got the last laugh by winning the game 75-69.
Folks - this is possibly the last time these two powerhouses will meet as Big East foes before the Orange defect for the woeful football conference known as the ACC. It's tough to picture Boeheim getting fired up for a game against Clemson and it would shock no one to see him step down as coach following this season.
It'll be a tough game but will this be Georgetown's chance to complete the trifecta and officially shut the Carrier Dome?

HS: No clue. I could see Georgetown winning by 10, I could see Syracuse winning by 10. I don't think it'll be a blowout either way. If Thompson and Clark start bombing away, Syracuse is in deep shit. If Syracuse can get their stuff going inside and Lubick and Sims get knocked around a bit, I think it puts Syracuse is a good spot. I don't think they'll play this one out of the 60's, so give me Syracuse, 65-63. If you're taking the first half, I'll go Georgetown, 28-24.
TN: You want me to predict a Big East basketball game? In 2012? Are you insane? Every time I do this I am so far off from what actually happens that it's laughable.
All I will say is that I obviously expect Syracuse to win but I expect a great game in front of a very loud crowd who will, hopefully, not throw debris at you. Syracuse 68, Georgetown 63.

I don't quite know how the rocket scientists in the league office could let this game only happens once in a season, especially this year. If WVU gets its way, the deviants in orange will be off to serve as FLUFFER for the tobacco road showdown. I should be more nervous than I am. My nerves should be at an interplanetary level. Maybe it's because we are nearly a 10 point underdog, but I am just not worried. The truth is, I think that favorite or underdog status is thrown out the window in games like this. Regardless of what the 'Cuse Internet Troll Association says, we are, er, WERE their biggest rival. It ain't UCONN. I am not making the prediction that we will beat them up in Canadia. They are talented, tall and deep this year. We are much better than everyone thought we would be, but is that enough to beat them on their home floor, in what could be our last regular season game with The Orange? Will the Chinese experience help us step up in a hostile environment? Bottles in China are the same as bottles in Canadia, right?
I have been trying to keep CAPTAIN FURY bottled up. I think I have done a reasonably good job. Tonight will be tough. I could see myself being asked to go watch this game from a bar (and then being asked to leave that bar). OK, I have now worked myself up. I am severely, extremely, OH CRAP LEVEL NERVOUS. I want this game. I have been doing good deeds all week. Hell, I found a wallet in GCT and took the time to internet stalk the guy in order to give it back. The Hoyas lead the Big East is shooting percentage against a zone defense at 47%, in large part due to the deft interior passing of bigs Henry Sims and Nate Lubick and the outside shooting of Hollis Thompson, Jason Clark and Markel Starks. Put simply, these Hoyas are zone busters, and tonight I expect a ton of Otto Porter with the ball at the top of the key. Cuse likes to get out in transition, so the key tonight will be making shots to prevent the break outs. With 9.5 points I'm tempted to throw some coinage on the Hoyas moneyline, but for the sake of this modest exercise I'm rolling with the Hoyas and the points and I've already spent the winnings.

We can be honest and still hate you, don't worry! It doesn't require any change of attire.
What we need to do is replicate some form of zone disruption, like what happened with Wright in the middle last year – that will be crucial. What we need to NOT do is give you guys points by committing stupid turnovers and missing easy rebounds. I’d also love to see our outside shooting get hot, but that’s not a deal-breaker in terms of how the game plays out.

Honestly, it's always hard to say.
The guys can really find an extra gear for Syracuse sometimes (see Markel Starks in the CW-less game, the opening barrage in the Dome game we lost, or, in a win, Chris Wright breaking the zone down). Absurd, absurd things happen.
As I’ve said elsewhere, the Syracuse zone is one of the most ridiculous defenses in basketball. It could be the color orange, but whatever it is, it’s just so visible as you’re watching on television and it looks like Cuse is fielding six men by how covered the entire half-court looks. I would hate playing it if it wasn’t Cuse and it is, so it’s ten times as bad.
But honestly, we’ve seen our team break down a few defensive schemes this year and since the play to this point has been a surprise, it has made it hard to have expectations.
The one thing I expect from JTIII (and unfortunately Boeheim as well) is good coaching adjustments. I feel like I have the greatest sense of Thompson having a plan for an opponent when it comes to Cuse.
Anyway, to specifically answer your questions: I’m very very excited for this game, I feel like the team can break down the zone given the passing acumen of its players, and I’m afraid of cold shooting meaning we can’t keep the zone honest by spreading it out.

Agreed, the Syracuse Zone is a ball-buster
On the other hand, tall and athletic guys who can pass and shoot spot jumpers from the foul-line extended are the zone’s kryptonite. If you have to cover everyone on the court, you’re either pulling the center out of the middle (which leads to cuts and dunks/bunnies) or someone who can hurt you is open from downtown.
Hollis is the obvious zone buster, he’s 6-7 and can rain 3s over help defenders who have to rush back to the 3 point line after collapsing on Hank/Otto. If they shade someone on Hollywood, that will leave seams in the zone that Jason and Markel should mercilessly attack with penetration/kick-outs.
Our offense is designed to shred this type of defense, but we need to make sure we execute: knock down a good percentage of open shots, and MAKE THE BUNNIES when we attack the rim. We look to be playing better these last few games — color me cautiously optimistic.

Honesty: won't break my heart if we lose, provided we play well
1) It’s a tough road environment, but this team has shown some pretty extraordinary resiliency in those situations.
2) Cuse is deeeeeep. Gtown is deeper than we have been for the past couple of years, though there’s a definite shortage of experience. For us to win this game, the few older guys really need to be flawless and lead the team, and the younger guys need to play solidly and contribute as they have shown they can.
3) I haven’t gotten to see Fab Melo play much, but I’m excited to see Sims go to war with him.
4) Defense, defense, defense. No way we come away with this if we don’t give 100% on defense for the whole game.
5) Rebounding will be key on both ends of the court – the pregame analysis suggests that we should be able to do it fairly well against Cuse, but the key will be coming in ready to work.
6) NO SLOW STARTS…very afraid of getting buried early. Hoping the rivalry hype will prevent that.

That’s a hoyas team that beats most of the teams out there this year. A lot of nights, playing like that is going to beat this Syracuse team, too. Not letting Hollis in was rough, but maybe the right call. Either way, if there has ever been a moral victory, I think that has to be it. Losing by a bucket in the Carrier Dome, to a tough, tough ’Cuse squad? I think we can take this.
I’m a Georgetown guy, too, but let’s leave the bitching out our own team/the refs to the fellas on other Nunes. My hopes for the season are actually higher with that performance than they were going in.

I can’t blame the refs. The rule is that a player must be in place to check in before the scorekeeper’s horn. From there perspective they were just enforcing that rule.
The person I do blame is the clock operator. There were two judgment calls where Cuse got an assist from the scorekeeper.
First, in the second half, Cuse has the ball in the last 5 minutes. Cuse completely misses the basket. Loose ball. Whittington touches the ball and it goes out of bounds. The scorekeeper was allowed to count that touch as “possession” and Cuse gets the ball with a new 35 as opposed to inbounding with 2 on the clock. The refs converse, one member of the crew shake his head, and the third flashes a thumbs up to the scorekeeper.
Second, Gtown time out in overtime. Cuse has been routinely allowed to change personnel after a time out with a late horn. Scorekeeper sees Thompson coming to check in and sounds the horn. Referees converse and don’t allow Thompson to come in.
Thanks, Cuse. Enjoy the ACC. I hope we never play again. Good luck filling the dome for Virginia Tech.

I can understand the calls
I don’t honestly think the game was referees inconsistently, which is usually my biggest gripe in conference play.
My problem is that there were key judgment calls made by the scorekeeper who is the only game official that is actually on the Syracuse payroll.

I think that IS both teams, for real.
Both teams play elite defense. You can’t argue that after tonight. The difference is that cuse excels off of turnovers and 5 on 4s. Georgetown excels off of dead balls, set offense situations. cuse is, undoubtedly, a little more talented that Georgetown this year. However, Georgetown is the kind of team that can challenge kyuse.
Both teams got better tonight.
Georgetown has a bit of MATCHUP advantage against cuse, which along with the riavlry aspect, make this a matchup a pick’em instead of a Cuse -5 kind of game.
That’s not a partisan statement… I think it’s just fact.

I don't know why I am posting this
but anytime there’s a close game, the refs’/players’ mistakes get extra scrutiny because any one call/decision could have changed the outcome of the game. But, these sort of mistakes are always there, and part of winning is winning despite them. That’s why all the advanced analytics guys basically consider games decided by one basket a toss up. (Same goes for football games decided by less than a score.)
What we showed today is we are capable of playing as well as ‘Cuse. I don’t think it means we blow them out in the BET if we see them. But it does mean that we are legitimately a top 10-15 team, and that we are outclassed by no one.
I feel strangely fine.

hats off to you guys. I’m really pissed that this rivalry will not be an ongoing event in the future. It sucks the way that college sports conferences have evolved but Cuse did what was best for them and you cant really knock that. Truly sucks but it is what it is. Anyway, it was a great game. Sometimes they go your way sometimes they dont. Cuse played like garbage for much of the game and we were lucky as hell to get a win tonight but you know damn well I’ll take it!

The sad thing for both schools is that whether we play them again or not, there will never be a rivalry like this again. Duke and UNC could care less about Cuse, and Maryland isn’t a rival no matter what the ACC scheduling office says. For our part, no other Big East school can match this. Ah well.

I thought we played awesome at times tonight, and I just can’t be that angry about it. It was anyone’s game in that OT and we came up just short.
